Talking to an acquaintance who was born and raised in Poland Schulz is wonderful and read by most in high school After reading this collection I would definitely agree with the wonderful English I remember writing what I imagined to be a brilliant story when I was around 13 years old It was full of metaphor artistic language and descriptive language and I had agonised over every word to make it feel like I had painted a picture with words I handed that story in for my English homework and when I got it back the teacher had written too much purple prose on it And that was it That was all the feedback I received for my hours of work I was stunned I still have that short story and reading it now I can see how awful pretentious and flowery it actually was I relay this little anecdote because it is all I could think of when reading these collected short writings Too much purple prose English Boring mood pieces I d skip this and watch the Quay Brothers excellent adaptation of Street of Crocodiles instead Also I technically didn t read all of this but I read half which was than enough I m planning to move overseas in a couple of years so I need to read as many of my books as possible before then in order to make the task of culling and deciding what to keep that much easier so I really don t have the time to waste on a book that bores me as much as this one did English Schultz is often compared to Kafka but I found his workers relatable to those in James Joyce s DUBLINERS In this collection which is all of Schultz s known writing Schultz paints an extremely detailed picture of pre World War II Polish life Although some of the famous stories such as Street of Crocodiles have been studied in isolation from the other works in this collection the reader would be doing a great disservice to themselves and Schultz s work to not read them altogether as one continues text Several themes and characters continue to be explored from one story to the next even being carried over through the three different collections English i loved the first 200 pages absolutely hated the last 70 i accidentally took a 2 day gap from reading and honestly once i came back to it i was totally disillusioned by iteven tho for the first 200 pgs i was totally loving it some really beautiful musings on seasons masculinity vs femininity a beautiful little short about a puppy that I loved and I really related to all of the ramblings about the narrator s deteriorating father as it resembled exactly what I went through w my grandma as she slowly faded away with dementia Definitely agree with another review that I read however that he focuses far too much on showing off his techniques and too little on moving us toward anything so in the end it s a book that I ll remember for some of its the crop and held to such a high level that often times the work does not stand up to the praise I can safely say that with this collection of stories and the writing of Bruno Schulz this most definitely lives up to its reputation. The collected stories of eudora welty book Thank you Northwestern University Press and Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review Collected Stories English i feel bad about 3 stars the writing is beautiful and complete and takes its time exploring the people and worlds created the prose is gorgeous and illustrative and the stories are magic mr schultz is very dedicated to the exploration of transformations of matter and it was incredible seeing this in how he writes people places and inanimate objects Unfortunately for me the significance of the book ends with the stories the stories are good not for the lessons they teach or larger observations they make but rather just the fact that they are good stories that along with the prose being so long winded at times and getting lost in metaphor unfortunately lost my focus and made it tedious to read at times I know that these things i am complaining about are deeply personal to how i choose to read and what i look for in a book but i strongly believe this will be 5 stars for many people who enjoy what i have described English The family in Schultz Cinnamon Shops inhabit a strange surreal world always half shrouded in fog sickly lights and s deep winter darkness that seems to be an almost living entity Their apartment and shop contain any number of rooms depending on who of their tenants have moved out and an uncanny decrepitude lies over the entire apartment Whispering wallpapers gloomy long shadows that seem to move on their own accord The father is prone to deep fits of mania involving birds and mannequins. Book Collected stories There is a profound sense of disquiet in Schulz universe and a Kafkaesque air over it that borders on sheer horror I can t remember the last time I felt this moved by an authors work the sense of loss and awe I get from reading this is unlike anything I ve read before I ve compared him with Kafka as time moves according to some strange unnamed rules or not at all corridors lead off into nothingness and the characters behave abnormally at best Another author that immediately springs to mind is Thomas Ligotti who is perhaps the continuation of Schulz bizarre decrepitude and metaphysical horror Schulz prose often veers into the abstract with long beautiful paragraphs where the emotional states of wallpapers curtains and animals are explored in strange ways.
