It only took me two years to finish this book Why It certainly wasn t long I think I got carried away with my disgust for the subject matter and didn t really lean into the poetry and the language until the fourth chapter Interestingly the icky stuff was all front loaded to the first chapter What happened at Roissy was actually for me the most distressing part of the book partially because it felt s bit like gang rape and partially the inequity of the gendered roles I also didn t really think whipping was a turn on whereas when the author talked about how O felt submitting I felt much strongly that i was in a realm that I understood I understand thoughts particularly those written by women how could anybody ever assume this was a male writer the only thing that could explain it is that people might wonder at a woman writing about such debasement with such detachment Reading this book in English is s waste of time I ve never read a book that was so utterly French Everything from the choice of verbs and phrasing to the utterly blurry edges of a timeline was untranslatable The opening which one reviewer sneered at because of the truncated nature of its phrases was perfectly calculated to suggest a certain binary quality of choices The author never again resorted to this type of language and in fact sometimes the beauty of the language was so plangent and aromatic that I found myself enthralled in a dream Here is a description in the final pages of O s drive to a party where she will be displayed like a pet bird Rein n etait vrai dans ce pays que la nuit rendait l imaginaire sinon l odeur des sauges et des lavandes. and compassion would cause bankers to give up their obscene bonuses and bigots to embrace minorities I think a loss of free speech would be a small price for society to pay But the idea that books have the power to change people only seems to receive any traction when it comes to depraved books Now I don t doubt that certain sociopathic minds may take inspiration from a book or a work to commit acts of violence and depravity or that certain works have been used by certain political regimes to perpetrate mass violence and murder However as the Parable of the Sower cited above indicates I believe that the propensity must already be there in which case I pretty much suspect that with or without the offensive work the harm would still be done For all of the violence in video games like Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto the countries where we are most likely to find rampant violence would be places like Nigeria Afghanistan or Colombia where the ability to spend the day playing Call of Duty is somewhat hampered by a lack of money and electricity Do I approve of snuff films torture porn and other works of extreme violence No I don t I find them repugnant But at the same time I think we should temper our moral panic with a reality check and avoid over reacting As for Aury s little bestseller What is there to say It s been around for several decades now Last time I was in France I didn t see the place crawling with DBSM fetishists But if some people women or men find that having such a work available brings some relief by allowing them the space to fantasise and act out their
